12/29/2023 0 Comments Cinderella live actionRather than being this fantastical, perfect prince, Kit is portrayed as an earnest man who loves his family and treats people with kindness (as Cinderella does). It’s clear that Kit looks up to his father, and when the king is on his deathbed, he apologizes to Kit for trying to make him marry someone he doesn’t love. However, despite their disagreements, Kit’s relationship with his father is a loving one. The audience gets to see him struggle with the idea of becoming king, and defy his father’s wish that he marry a princess. This, along with showing more of his side of things, gives Kit more humility than the other Prince Charmings. It is also new that Prince Charming goes by “Kit”. Though other adaptations see Cinderella and Prince Charming meet before the ball (like the 1997 Cinderella with Brandyand Whitney Houston), they usually make her look obviously like a servant, rather than giving her a dignified look, like Ella has while on horseback. He prevents her from hearing his men call him Your Highness so as not to ruin their “meet-cute”, and tells Ella that he is an apprentice. Ella’s kindness and independence (and not necessarily her beauty) cause Kit to become infatuated with her. When Ella and Kit meet in the woods, Kit is hunting a beautiful stag and Ella convinces him not to. The Cinderella and Prince Charming love story in this film is also different from others. Rather than leaving it up to the audience to imagine scenarios that would have led to such a bitter personality, this remake shows us that behind all the hate, Lady Tremaine is a mother who fears for her daughters’ futures and misses being loved. Yes, Blanchett’s Lady Tremaine adheres to the depiction of the character as excessively cruel, but this film also shows us why she behaves that way. The scene where Lady Tremaine shares some of her past with Ella, and essentially admits to being jealous of Ella and her mother, is a huge development for the “evil stepmother” trope. Ella experiences the profound grief of losing both her parents at young ages, we see Kit ( Richard Madden) lose his father ( Derek Jacobi) who he also loved very much, and even Lady Tremaine touches on the loss of her first husband, whom she calls “the light of her life.” Cinderella plot lines usually glaze over the deaths that happen or have already happened, but this one addresses them head-on. In this film, however, grief is everywhere, and the actors reflect that pain in their performances. Though Cinderella’s parents are dead in most versions, the audience is rarely given enough time (or any time) with her parents to feel like grief is a major element of the story.
