If a dog is loose, odds are you know where to return it, people look out for each other, kids pop by to say hello, and a book club with awesome dinners at each hosts house. It isn't uncommon to get a text that says, "Husband working late. Maybe it's the snakes, coyotes, and fire threat that bonds us but we really love it. It's donation only for the park conservancy. One came through quickly and the other three weren't home but the responses were, "You know where the key is, go inside and just grab some! The doggies will love to see you!," "Do you know where our hidden key is?" and "Oh man, all I have is Truvia, can you use that?!" We have get-togethers, a play group on the street, and the people at the very top of the street literally bake cookies every Sunday for the cyclists or walkers. The other day my two toddlers and I were baking cookies for a potluck and I just needed 1/2 cup more of sugar. that isn't nosy but very social and friendly. We also keep our outside lights on all night on a timer, some on motion detector, which is a nice low cost way to increase safety. I think there is value to just having the sign out front that we are alarmed. We are very close to a medium sized city with some rough neighborhoods nearby and I think we get spillover sometimes because we are on a beautiful street that looks like a tempting target. I never thought I'd want one, it was hubby's idea and I have to admit, a good one. No motion detectors because of the dog, but all windows/doors wired. It's a monitored system monitor is a local company as the larger national ones like ADT we did not have great luck with (not as repsonsive). Gives me piece of mind, especially if home alone or years ago when home alone with kids and husband was traveling. We use it primarily at night and when we are not home, but also if I'm home for extended times alone like today when I am working from home. Scary to know someone was in my garage while I was in my kitchen steps away, and they could've easily opened the door to the house which was unlocked for those 30 minutes and come in. Had bike stolen from my garage 18 yrs ago, I'd left garage door open for maybe 30 minutes as I had just unloaded groceries and was going back out in half an hour to pick my daughter up at preschool. Decent neighborhood but we have had break-ins, including a smash and grab at a neighbor's while the family (including 2 young children) were home and upstairs. Have had one for years, in this house and previous house.
